Chapter 76: Chapter 77: Little Beggar_l
The first to make his move was a little beggarboy. Taking advantage of Su Zixuan’s inattention, he bumped into him intentionally and seized the opportunity to steal his money pouch.
Believing himself to be undetected, he curled up his lips in delight, making a quick getaway.
His small figure merged easily with the crowded streets, like a slippery catfish navigating through human crevices, he quickly darted into a deserted alley.
There, he took a breather and began to swing the pouch around, humming a tune, his body swaggered effortlessly in delight.
Just as he was about to open the pouch and count his loot, chirping sounds of a bird, followed by a teasing laugh came from behind him.
“Pretty fast runner you are, nimble with your hands, I see. Clearly a seasoned pickpocket,” a voice said.
“Who’s there?”
The little beggarboy turned around sharply, his scalp tingling with fear as he faced the petite figure approaching him.
“Considering your tender age, return the pouch, and I’ll let you off without reporting to the authorities,” the figure said.
With her hands behind her back, Su Qingluo strolled forward casually in the warm sunlight, her teasing gaze fixed on the trembling beggarboy.
“Sure, try and take it if you can,” he retorted.
Realizing she was even younger than he was, the beggarboy dismissed her as a threat. He took off, racing out of the alley in a trail of dust.
Having begged on the streets of Mingshui County for several months, he knew the area inside out. He aimed at losing her in the crowd but didn’t reckon there was a tracking Little Kingfisher bird above his head.
The little girl whom he had disregarded was standing atop a three-story tavern with the clearest view, toying with her bamboo flute while watching him wander blindly around the main streets, like a headless fly.
Simultaneously, Su Zixuan and Wang Meng waited impatiently under a large willow tree by the river channel, an air of frustration looming.
Su Zixuan, a scholar rather than a warrior, proficient only in basic archery, had no combat skills to speak of.
Wang Meng, on the other hand, possessed innate divine strength enabling him to wield a pair of meteor hammers that weighed over a thousand jin, easily.
However, his limited martial arts training, and lack of agility and stamina, meant he couldn’t chase over roofs and track at a great distance. He was of no help.
Realizing that their money pouch had been stolen, the two boys had no idea what to do except wait nervously under the willow tree for their sister’s pleasant news.
The beggarboy couldn’t recall how many times he’d raced around the alleys. All he knew was that every time he stopped, a chirping Little Kingfisher would circle above him, closely followed by the sudden appearance of the little girl.
Scared witless, his legs trembling, he darted about, on the verge of vomiting blood.
Ever since he began traveling with his pickpocket godfather, honing his thieving skills, his nimbleness had helped him successfully thieve across many places. He hadn’t botched a job until today.
Who could have expected that he’d tumble in a nondescript small town, encountering a troublesome little girl.
If only he knew, he wouldn’t have stolen her brother’s pouch. He was disastrously exhausted, almost throwing up blood.
The little thief cursed under his breath, running underneath a bridge arch, and collapsing in exhaustion.
He was tired to the point of fainting, literally drained of energy.
“Chirp chirp.”

The chirping of the Little Kingfisher echoed, as it circled curiously above him in the bridge archway.
It found the little beggarboy fascinating.
Even though he knew he couldn’t escape, he kept circling mindlessly. Was his brain filled with porridge?
“Cough cough.”
The sound of his own coughing caused the beggarboy to disdainfully realize he’d been belittled by a bird. He decided to pretend to be dead, closing his eyes tightly..
