Chapter 17: A Big Clam
Vicky_
Yuyu got her first new tooth in her third month, said “mom” in her fourth month, was able to crawl in her fifth month, walked in her sixth month, ran in her seventh month, learned to read in her eighth month, recited poetry in her ninth month, wrote in her tenth month, followed Su Hu into the mountains for the first time and found a thousand-year-old glossy ganoderma in her eleventh month, and got rid of a group of tiger cubs at the age of one year.
Since the adoption of Yuyu, the life of Su Hu’s family was getting better day by day. They bought lands and built new houses. Qiaoqiao and Doudou had gone to school one after another.
The happy days of childhood passed quickly. In the blink of an eye, five years had passed.
It was the hottest day in the summer. At noon, it was hot as hell on the outside.
A small head popped up in the rippling waters of a river. A little girl with a smile wiped her face, spat out several mouthfuls of water, and swam to the bank dexterously with a basin-sized clam.
“Hey, you, it is so hot out there. Why did you go to the river? Be careful. The sun will burn your skin. Come back quickly.”
Li Xiu’e was standing in the shadow of her courtyard wall. She fanned herself with a fan and looked toward the river bank, watching a little girl get out from the river. She hurriedly urged the girl to come back.
“Mom, look what I’ve found from the bottom of the river!”
The little girl ran back from the river bank. She couldn’t wait to hold the huge clam and present it to her mother. Her big black and bright eyes were shining. They were very beautiful.
“Go home and change your clothes. They are all wet, and your face is totally red.”
Li Xiu’e’s heart melted when she heard the gentle voice of Yuyu. When Li Xiu’e took the clam from the little girl, she looked dissatisfied with the complaint, but in fact, she was very happy and satisfied deep inside.
“Mom, I want to drink hawthorn juice.”
The little girl hugged her mother’s arm like a spoiled child and kept shaking it.
“Not before you change your clothes.”
Li Xiu’e let Yuyu hang herself on her arm as she pushed the door open and walked into the yard. She kept nagging as she walked, “You are a five-year-old girl now. You have to behave. Don’t act like those naughty boys who always go to the river. It will turn your skin sunburned color which will make you less pretty.”
“Haha! Mom, you are right. The boy next door is totally sunburned.”
The little girl heard her mother’s words and started laughing. The clear and sweet laughter like a silver bell echoed in the yard.
“You are laughing at him?”
Li Xiu’e smiled and poked Yuyu’s forehead. She then said, “You are almost as sunburned as he is.”
“Nah, you are lying to me.”
The little girl rubbed her arm affectionately and said, “I am Qingluo. I am a lovely baby favored by God. I won’t turn sunburned because of the sun.”
The little girl named herself Su Qingluo.
It meant that she was beautiful and a temporarily inconspicuous treasure.
“Go and change your clothes. When your father comes back, let’s clean up the clam.”
Li Xiu’e smelt the sweet fragrance of the little girl and looked at her with affectionate eyes.
“Well, okay!”
The little girl nodded and ran into her room. With a nasal sound, a soft voice came out of the window. “Mom, don’t forget the hawthorn juice.”
“Okay. I’ll make it for you now.”

Li Xiu’e smiled and walked to the kitchen with the clam in her arms. Soon, smoke came out of the chimney.
The clear birdsong came along the wind. A red kingfisher flew across the rippling river, circled above the courtyard, and landed on the edge of the window.
“You actually sneaked out to play when I stopped looking at you for a second. Where did you go?”
Su Qingluo heard the bird singing happily and smiled. She changed her clothes and came to the edge of the window. She gently stroked the little kingfisher. It had brocade-like feathers, which were smooth and soft.
